Agia Elessa

The holy shrine of Agia Elessa was built at the place of martyrdom of the saint (4th century) on a mountain of four hundred meters with amazing views to the southwest. In place of the ruins of an older Church, the newest large one-room church of Agia Elessa has been erected in 1871, while newer cells were built in the north. The three-storey bell tower was built in the NW.

On the south wall of the Temple is a modern representation with the central theme of Agia Elessa, in a bust surrounded by twelve scenes of her life and martyrdom. To the southwest of the church is the location of the tree where her father hung the Saint.

Her memory is celebrated in Kythira on the 1st of August.
