CULTURAL EVENTS ON THE ISLAND

"Journey to Kythira"

Every summer the Municipality of Kythira organizes the “Journey to Kythira“, the annual municipal festival with many cultural and artistic events from May to October.

Within the festival the visitor will find exhibitions of visual artists, concerts, theatrical events, film screenings, scientific symposia, folklore exhibitions, traditional festivals, informative lectures, sports meetings and religious rituals.

Renowned artists from various fields of art present their souls and works to the public in various parts of the island.

For the events included in the festival one can be informed from the official website of the Municipality, from the media of the island and from various local publications. You can also download the relevant program from here.

Band of Kythira of Potamos

The role of this band in the cultural events of Kythera is particularly important. It was founded by the late chief musician Stratis Theodorakakis and other philosophers from Potamos in 1964. Today it numbers around 30 musicians, who work on a voluntary basis, and covers the national and religious holidays of the island, while giving many successful concerts.

It is one of the few artistic associations of Kythera and gathers around it many musicians and people who are interested in letters and arts. In addition to the parade band, a traditional music choir and art, puppet and cinema workshops operate within the association.

He actively participates every year in the cultural festival of the Municipality.

Artistic journey

In recent years, many notable artists have presented their work in Kythira as part of the festival. Mercato’s space in Chora and the hall of the Cultural Center in Potamos have hosted many art exhibitions while the squares of Chora, Potamos and Fratsia were “dressed” musically with the melodies of famous songwriters. Several concerts are also hosted in the area of the sundial in Avlemonas, in the piers of the ports of Agia Pelagia and Kapsali and in the courtyard of high school.
