The island of Antikythira

Antikythira (Tsirigoto) is located south of Kythira. Today’s few inhabitants of the island are descendants of the Cretans who settled it about 300 years ago. The manners, customs, music and native language of Antikythira are similar to those of western Crete. It has a heliport, a doctor’s office and a good road network that connects the approximately 10 settlements. According to the locals Potamos or “Lius” is the capital and port of the island.

Antikythira belongs to the Municipality of Kythera as a Local Community, which has an office on the island. (tel.00302736033004)

In Antikythira there is the only Ornithological Station in Greece. The aim of the station is to monitor the almost 250 species of birds that have been recorded on the island, as well as to protect the black peregrine falcon (Falco eleonorae / Mavropetritis), a species of sea hawk, which maintains in Antikythera its largest colony in the world.

On the official website of Association of Antikythirian Ubiquitous “Agios Miron” you will find a lot of useful information about Antikythira.
