Churches and Monasteries of Kythera

The presence of many Christian monuments, holy pilgrimages and historical churches is due to the deep religious feeling of every Kythirian. Each of them is associated with a web of legends and folk traditions, which developed gradually over the centuries. Among the monasteries, the pilgrimage of Panagia Myrtidiotissa, which is located at the place where the icon was discovered in the west of the island, holds a prominent position. Myrtidiotissa is the patron saint of Kythira everywhere and is worshiped with special respect. The island also has its own patron saints, Agios Theodoros and Agia Elessa.

Here are presented only some of the most important ecclesiastical monuments of Kythira, (Holy pilgrimages and Byzantine & Post-Byzantine temples), as in total they number much more. (About 50 of the Byzantine and 300 of the Post-Byzantine period) *
