Events of Antikythira

The most important day of the year for Antikythera is the Festival of the Patron Saint of the island of Agios Mironos, on the 17th of August which is celebrated in the traditional way. For two days, (August 16 and 17), the inhabitants and the numerous visitors of the island celebrate their patron saint and patron saint with a traditional Cretan feast, which includes live traditional Cretan music and dance.

From the beginning of August, the inhabitants hunt ibex, which they cook on the eve and on the day of the feast of the Saint in the monastery and offer them to the pilgrims. The women of the island knead bread, which they bake in the traditional wood-fired oven located on the site of the monastery.

On the eve of the feast, the Great Festive Vespers is celebrated and then a traditional Cretan feast takes place in the courtyard of the Temple. On the day of the feast, after the Solemn Divine Liturgy, the procession of the icon takes place to the cave of the find, where “Agiasmos” is performed. The feast continues after the end of the Litany until late.
