Sweet temptations

Among the traditional sweets, the Rosedes stand out, based on Kythera honey, with almonds and sugar, and the Pasticheto, a well-known sweet of the island made from fresh butter, vanilla and quince, and the Mill Cake, (because the almonds were ground in a mill) .

A wonderful local dessert is Xerotigano with crispy leaves, thyme honey, sesame and cinnamon. Finally, the spoon sweets, with old recipes from Kytherian grandmothers housewives, such as cut quince, grape, watermelon, and of course almonds, the well-known mantoles, as they are called in Kefalonia, and jams made from apricot, orange, peach, cherry, etc.

Particularly tasty are the summer fruits from dry (dry) vegetables, such as watermelons and melons. Also the local peaches, (local variety also known as “Venus’s breast”), figs, prickly pears and the local dry vine beans from which the black-eyed beans are made.

Look for the delicious fruits of the island in the local bazaars where the producers also have pure fruit and vegetable products of the Kythera land.
