Ravine of Mitata

Mitata, is one of the most picturesque and oldest villages of Kythira that has many surprises in store for the visitor. The village is built on a hill and is surrounded by the ravines of Apogyros, Tsigoura that continues to Mountaros, Vokoli, Gonia and Skotini. All these ravines join at the foot of Paliokastro and end in the fertile valley of Paliopolis.

From the bridge between Mitata and Viaradika begins a wonderful route that ends at the Lake of Paliopolis. Walking through fossilized shells one can see the “Black Cave” in the cavernous church of Agios Georgios and from there descend to the beautiful ravine of Skotini, which joins the gorge of Tsakonas.

These deep ravines with the paths, the watermills, the orchards, the slopes with rife vegetation, with abundant myrtles, the emblem of Mitata, with orange, lemon and plane trees, real fairgrounds, are a source of life for the village, landscapes of particular natural beauty and tourist interest.

Walking along this route, it is shocking to think that it was once a seabed, as evidenced by the abundant fossilized shells.
