Permanent exhibition of Crests

The building of the powder magazine, of the Venetian castle of Kythira houses the permanent exhibition of Crests, which was formed by the First Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities and is open to the public since the summer of 2013. This is a collection of 17 crests of Venetian families (Venier house), but also local islanders (Kasimatis house), as well as families of Orthodox bishops (Mormoris). The exhibition is divided into three thematic sections:

a) Crests of family branches, which includes crests belonging to the same family with variants in the heraldic representation

b) Identity crests that are identified with specific families without any other variation in the heraldic representation

c) Crests of families of bishops of Kythira such as Bishop Mormoris, who has the murmur fish embossed in the center of the crest. This belongs to the category of “speaking”, “crying” or “obvious” crests, because the emblem it bears has a resemblance to the surname of its holder.

The Museum with the exhibits, the bilingual explanatory signs and the information leaflets offers the visitor the opportunity to discover the past of the place, through the complete presentation of the historical, social and folklore elements of our island.

Access: Asphalt road to the entrance of the castle and then a stone cobblestone path.
