Archaeological Museum of Kythira

It is housed in Chora of Kythera. The Museum is located at the entrance of the settlement of Chora and a short distance from the main square of the settlement.

The Archaeological Museum opened in the fall of 1981 and remained open to the public for 25 years, until January 2006, when a strong earthquake caused severe damage to the building. In October 2013 the building is evacuated and at the same time the repair and re-exhibition works begin. After a long period of nine years that it remained closed due to damage suffered by the earthquake of 2006, the Museum reopened its doors to the public on May 8, 2016, completely renovated and with a modern exhibition. The work of the re-exhibition was performed by the Ephorate of Antiquities of West Attica, Piraeus and Islands of the Ministry of Culture.

The building has modern infrastructure, connection and free internet access for visitors, and is accessible to People with Disabilities (people with movement problems and visually impaired).

The animated film from the Archaeological Museum of Kythera “I am the Leon of Kythera”, directed by George Didymiotis and written by Evi Pini, won first place in the public’s preferences, after the electronic voting held on the platform of the European competition Museums in Short 2018. Watch the wonderful film here.
