The castles of Kythira
Kythera, suffering from pirate raids during the Byzantine period, passes with the rest of the Ionian Islands under Venetian jurisdiction, immediately after the overthrow of the Byzantine state in 1204. After the first period of Venetian rule, when the ruling that the is given to the house of the noble Markos Venieris, in the four centuries that followed until the overthrow of the Venetian Republic, relations with Monemvasia and Crete developed.
This period is characterized by development projects on the island, among of which are the four castles of Kythera presented below.
