Gerakari Forest
In the northwest of the island, we find the picturesque village of Gerakari in the area of which is the largest wooded area in Kythira. It extends to the north-western side of the island and consists of pines, eucalyptus and local shrubs that in many cases reach the sea.
The forest is an important ecosystem for Kythira, hosting a large number of flora, fungi and fauna. It is an intermediate station of migratory birds on their way from the Peloponnese to the south. Its role in regulating the microclimate of the region is very important.
The area is crossed by dirt roads – fire zones, which are suitable for walking. One can also enjoy wonderful sunsets in the area.
